PORTLAND, Ore. – An early morning Southeast Portland house fire killed an 84-year-old woman and injured another person on Saturday.

The fire at 3318 SE Salmon St. was first reported at 3:21 a.m. Callers warned that someone might be inside, according to Lt. Rich Chatman of Portland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters arrived and attempted to rescue the woman. They pulled her out of the house within minutes of arriving but it was too late. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Chatman said. The woman’s identity was not released.

Another person made it to safety in the backyard but not before suffering serious smoke inhalation injuries. That person was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Chatman said.

The fire extended to a neighboring home but firefighters were able to limit the damage to just one side of the home.
