Police release TriMet video of Owen Klinger the night he disappeared

Video shows the missing Portland student walking west on North Willamette Blvd. Previously, police believed Klinger had walked north on Portsmouth toward Lombard.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police released new TriMet video showing missing University of Portland student Owen Klinger walking west on North Willamette Boulevard the night he disappeared.

Previously, they believed Klinger had walked north on Portsmouth toward Lombard Street.

Police are asking residents in the area from Willamette to Lombard streets, and Fiske to Ida avenues for any personal security video they might have on the night of Oct. 6.

Also, they are asking any ride-share operators or individuals who may recall picking someone up in the area who matches Owen's description to contact investigators.

A team of investigators from Portland police, along with state, local and federal partners, continue to work together to find Klinger.

Klinger left his dorm on Oct. 6 at 7:50 p.m. and has not been seen or heard from since.

Klinger told his friends he was going to a lacrosse team meeting. Police learned that there was no team meeting scheduled. Instead, he left the UP campus at 7:50 p.m. He also withdrew $150 from an ATM on campus.

Police previously said Owen turned off his phone. On Friday, they clarified to say his phone has not been sending or receiving data, but they can't say how or why. They have requested Klinger's cell phone data from T-mobile and Google.

Police earlier this week said that Klinger had watched videos about hopping freight trains and watched the movie ‘"Into the Wild," in which a young man leaves to go to Alaska to live off the grid, prior to his disappearance.

Klinger's parents were frustrated by police's train-hopping theory. His father said just because Owen watched “Into the Wild” doesn't mean he took off. They said he also read that book in high school and it was something he and his friends had talked about.

“He did watch the movie ‘Into the Wild,’ so that’s one of the police’s theories. He also watched 'Ocean’s Eleven,' but I don’t think he’s hijacked any art in the last week,” Dustin Klinger said.

On Friday, Owen's mother, Mary Klinger, said his search history shows he hadn't watched any train videos "in the recent past."

Despite her earlier frustrations, Mary said she's happy police continue to move forward with the investigation with more resources.

"It breaks my heart how much time has gone by since [Owen] was seen. I guess I’m encouraged that police are working and really adding to this effort," she said.

The Klingers estimate that 400 volunteers have searched 300 acres for their son.

Another search for Owen will take place Saturday morning at North Park Blocks in Portland.
