Snow collapses, damages roofs around Oregon

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Snow has caused roofs to collapse throughout Oregon, from a high school gym in central Oregon to a warehouse in Hillsboro.

The roof of a HIllsboro produce warehouse on Southeast 4th Avenue and Walnut Street partially collapsed Thursday morning under several inches of snow.

Utilities were shut off to the building out of concerns for a potential natural gas leak.

Five people who were asleep in the building escaped unhurt, according to the Hillsboro Fire Department. They were with a garment alteration company unrelated to the produce business.

The inflatable roof of a sports complex at Southwest Portland's Mittleman Jewish Community Center collapsed. Members were notified Thursday morning that facility would remain closed through January 15th.

In Bend, KTVZ reports that the roof of the Highland Magnet School at Kenwood Elementary School collapsed early Thursday, prompting district officials to close all school for two days for inspection.

And in Redmond, KTVZ reports that Lynch Elementary was closed Thursday morning out of concerns of the snow load on the roof. All other Redmond schools were expected to stay open.

The Bend Bulletin reports that the roof of a building that held trucks in the Old Mill District collapsed Wednesday evening. Earlier, a FedEx distribution center was evacuated due to fears the roof could collapse. A wall was buckled.

In Eastern Oregon, neighbors called out for help to clear their homes and buildings of snow, including clearing roofs, according to the Malheur Enterprise
