MORE: Man who went missing in May after tubing down Washougal River drowned, medical examiner's office says

Original story from May 6, 2019:

A man is missing and a woman is recovering after they were thrown from their innertubes while floating down the Washougal River Saturday, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded to the 38700 block of Northeast Washougal River Road around 8:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a woman trapped in the water, screaming for help.

After nearly two hours rescue crews were able to pull Emily McCauley out of the river. A search for the man has been suspended, officials said.

The 28-year-old Portland resident was unconscious and taken to the hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

On Sunday, after regaining consciousness, McCauley told deputies she had been floating with another person: 30-year-old Stephen Barnaby.

They had come to float along the Big Eddy, she said, but were quickly swept into the fast-moving currents and tossed off their separate inner tubes.

McCauley told authorities she collided with debris and rocks, which pinned her in the water.

She said she watched Barnaby float by.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office’s Office Marine Unit and other deputies were  deployed in the search but suspended it as of Monday morning.

According to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, crews Sunday found Barnaby’s vehicle, raft and other belongings.

Barnaby is described as a white male with brown shoulder length hair and a short brown beard.

He was last seen wearing black pants and a black t-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
