Three people injured in gas truck crash along I-5 exit; freeway reopened

The tanker truck hauling liquified carbon dioxide rolled onto its side at the Water Avenue exit.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Three people were injured in a gas truck crash in Southeast Portland on Monday afternoon.

The driver of the northbound tanker truck hauling liquified carbon dioxide crashed into several vehicles before the truck rolled onto its side on the Water Avenue exit just before 3 p.m.

Three people were taken to hospitals, police said, but none of their injuries was life-threatening.

It’s unclear what caused the crash.

The Oregon Department of Transportation initially closed both directions of I-5 as a precaution out of concern about a potential gas leak. Southbound lanes were quickly reopened and northbound lanes were open by 4:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, an unrelated crash closed four lanes of northbound I-5 on the Marquam Bridge. It's unclear what caused the crash.
