PORTLAND, Ore. — As of Friday, May 1, Portland will have a sixth geographic designation -- South Portland -- to eliminate an awkward numbering system for addresses that made navigation difficult for emergency responders and delivery drivers.
It encompasses an area that runs along the Willamette River, roughly from the Ross Island Bridge to the Sellwood Bridge and to Barbur Boulevard to the west. About 6,000 addresses are affected.
South Portland now becomes the latest designation, created in 1931,that includes North, Northeast, Northwest, Southwest and Southeast Portland. The change had been in the works for several years.
It also eliminates a unique numbering system where addresses began with the number zero, which was hard to sort out for most anyone, let alone first responders.
An example provided by PBOT is The Old Spaghetti Factory, was listed at 0715 SW Bancroft Street. Friday, the address is 715 S Bancroft Street.
