PSU to close one campus block to vehicle traffic; closure may become permanent

The Montgomery Pop-Up Plaza pilot project will close Southwest Montgomery Street, between 6th Avenue and Broadway Street, to vehicle traffic. Bicyclists will still be allowed.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A street in the heart of the Portland State University campus will close for one month starting Wednesday, and the closure may be permanent.

The Montgomery Pop-Up Plaza pilot project will close Southwest Montgomery Street, between 6th Avenue and Broadway Street, to vehicle traffic. Bicyclists will still be allowed.

The project is in partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

The closure will evaluate the block’s potential as a “an inclusive and welcoming space,” according to a news release from PSU.

Project leaders say they will gather feedback from the PSU community when deciding whether to make the closure permanent.

A PSU spokesman said the closure may become a campus fixture if the pilot project is a big success.
