PORTLAND, Ore. -- More than 30,000 Portland General Electric Customers lost power Tuesday evening as fire and utility crews responded to a gas leak in Southeast Portland.
The gas leak also led to a closure and evacuations along part of Foster Road.
NW Natural reported shortly after 8 p.m. that the leak had been stopped. Shortly after 9 p.m., the number of customers still impacted by the outage had dropped to less than 5,000.
Portland Fire & Rescue had first reported the gas leak at Southeast 102nd Avenue and Foster Road shortly before 5:30 p.m. They said a construction crew hit a gas line.
Southeast Foster Road was immediately closed from 101st to 104th avenues and crews evacuated buildings along that stretch of road. The road section is expected to be closed through the evening as the damaged line is repaired.
At the request of fire officials, Portland General Electric shut down three feeders adjacent to the leak at 7:15 p.m.
Portland Fire & Rescue said the feeders were turned off "to prevent any potential ignition sources."
