PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland barber Ivan Tadic celebrated his 88th birthday on Wednesday.
More impressive than that, though: Ivan has been cutting hair in Southwest Portland’s Multnomah Village neighborhood for 70 years.
"I have never thought about retiring because I'm going to go down cutting," he said.
Ivan’s father, Ivan Sr., opened Multnomah Barber Shop in 1933. Ivan started cutting hair there in 1949, when he was 18 years old.
He spent several years in the Navy, serving in the Korean War. After he returned from duty, Ivan went back to work at the barbershop, where he and his father cut hair together for over 20 years.
Many of Ivan’s customers have been coming to him for decades. Many of them travel great distances, including the Oregon Coast, Los Angeles, and even Alaska, for regular haircuts.
Most of his customers consider him more than a barber. He’s also their friend.
Ivan’s Multnomah Barber Shop is located at 7826 SW 35th Ave.
