Police identify man shot, killed by troopers on I-5 near Salem

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours after the shooting.

SALEM, Ore. — A person is dead after an officer-involved shooting late Thursday night on Interstate 5 south of Salem.

The shooting took place shortly before midnight in the southbound lanes near Delaney Road.

Prior to the shooting, Oregon State Police had received complaints about the driver. Troopers located and pulled over the driver. During the traffic stop, “an altercation ensued, and shots were fired by the troopers,” according to Salem police.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as 51-year-old William Patrick Floyd, of Oregon City.

The troopers were not hurt. They have been placed on administrative leave, per OSP protocol. They will be identified this weekend.

Salem police are investigating the shooting. When they finish, the investigation will be reviewed by the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.

Southbound lanes of the freeway were closed until about 8 a.m. Friday.
