Oregon man among four who died in Seattle crane collapse: Report

One of the four people who died when a crane collapsed in Seattle on Saturday was an ironworker who lived in the Portland metro area, the Oregonian reports.

PORTLAND, Ore. — One of the four people who died when a crane collapsed in Seattle on Saturday was Travis Corbet an ironworker from Oregon.

"Travis is well loved, a respected Marine brother, and shall be sorely missed by Many people who have had the privilege to share their lives with him and dearly love him," his aunt Gena Corbet told KGW.

Joe Bowers, the business manager for the local union that represented him told the Oregonian that the man lived in the Portland area and had recently married. He didn't reveal the name of the worker out of respect for the family.

The Oregonian reports that the man was a member of the union, Local 29 of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers, for at least 10 years.

"He was a great guy," Bowers told the Oregonian. "Always willing to learn, and always helping other people that he could."

Four people died Saturday afternoon after a crane collapsed in downtown Seattle, falling onto traffic. One woman and three men were dead before the first firefighters arrived at the scene, at Mercer Street and Fairview Avenue.

KING reports that two of the people killed were ironworkers working on the crane and the other two were inside vehicles crushed by the crane. One was identified Sunday as a student at Seattle Pacific University.

Others were injured. A mother and her young child were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries and released late Saturday, while a 28-year-old man is in satisfactory condition, according to hospital officials.

"It's a horrible day in Seattle when something like this happens right in the heart of our city," Mayor Jenny Durkan said. "Most people have driven down this road at some time in their lives. But it's a time when we come together because Seattle is a city that rallies around each other."
