Police identified the man as 69-year-old Stanley Hayes of Hillsboro.

HILLSBORO, Ore. — A Hillsboro man was shot by police and later pronounced dead at a hospital after he fired multiple rounds from a pistol and rifle at a Hillsboro condo complex Thursday morning, police said.

Police identified the man as 69-year-old Stanley Hayes.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. to the 300 block of Northeast Edgeway Drive on a report of an armed man, said Sgt. Eric Bunday.

After officers arrived, multiple rounds were fired from a pistol and rifle that struck neighboring homes and vehicles, Bunday said.

Hayes then emerged from the home armed, and the situation escalated to officers firing their weapons, he said.

The involved officers were identified as Sgt. James Haxton of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Hillsboro police officer Christopher Taaca.
