Inflatable dancers are latest Astoria sea lion hazing tools

The Port of Astoria has turned to inflatable dancers to haze sea lions that overtaken the docks.

ASTORIA, Ore. -- First, electrified mats. Then beach balls. And who can forget that fake orca.

Every effort to keep sea lions from overtaking the docks at the Port of Astoria has failed.

Inflatable dancers? Why not.

They went up Thursday and actually worked. For now.

"The thing about the sea lions is, they're very intelligent animals," said Port official Robert Evert, "and so if they realize these are not a threat or harm to them, it's possible they'll get back on the docks."

What's next?

Students from Knappa High are building metal barriers to put around the docks.
