Beaverton man killed in paragliding crash on Oregon Coast

Rescuers reached the man but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

TILLAMOOK COUNTY, Oregon — A Beaverton man died Sunday night after he crashed while paragliding on the Oregon Coast.

Gary Mudrow, 44, was paragliding at Cape Lookout State Park. Witnesses said Mudrow appeared to be too low when he took off, according to Oregon State Police. Witnesses saw Mudrow crash into the Pacific Ocean and saw him trying to use the glider as a flotation device.

Mudrow was in a remote area between Cape Lookout State Park and Cape Lookout, only accessible by water rescue crews, according to Netarts Oceanside Fire Department. A rescuer with the fire department and a rescuer with the U.S. Coast Guard reached Mudrow, who was unconscious and not breathing. Mudrow was entangled in the ropes from his glider, Netarts Oceanside Fire Department said.

He was freed by the rescuers, put on a WaveRunner and rushed to shore. Mudrow was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 7 p.m.
