Suspect arrested for setting man’s SUV on fire hours after confrontation at Salem roadside memorial

The man’s vehicle is believed to be a total loss with damages exceeding $12,000.

KEIZER, Ore. — Police arrested a man accused of setting an SUV on fire in the driveway of a Keizer home on June 27.

On Wednesday, Keizer police arrested 33-year-old Joseph Daniel Rife for first-degree arson.

His bond is set at $40,000.

On June 26, a Salem man’s SUV was set on fire hours after he got into a confrontation with several people who objected to his removal of items from a Salem roadside memorial honoring three teens.

Rife was present at the confrontation, detectives said.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 27, police received a report of a red 2008 Ford Explorer was set on fire in the driveway of a home in the 4700 block of 18th Avenue NE in Keizer. Officers say the owner was the same man who had been removing items from the memorial.

The man’s vehicle is believed to be a total loss with damages exceeding $12,000.
