One dead, one injured in crash near Stayton

One person was killed and another injured in a crash near Stayton, Ore. on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019.

PORTLAND, Ore. — An 86-year-old Stayton woman was killed in a crash Saturday night near Stayton.

The crash happened at 5:35 p.m. on Highway 22E and Fern Ridge Road SE.

According to investigators, 88-year-old Mark Higley of Stayton was driving a Mercury Marquis west on Highway 22E and turned west onto Fern Ridge Road SE, directly into the path of a Chevrolet Suburban.

The passenger in the Marquis, 86-year-old Ella Higley of Stayton died in the crash. The driver was not injured.

One passenger in the Suburban, 52-year-old Robert Dethman of Culver was seriously injured in the crash. Two other adults and four children inside the Suburban were not hurt.

Highway 22E was closed for four hours after the crash.
