Man collecting cans and bottles killed by speeding, drunk driver in N. Portland, police say

During their investigation, officers learned that a man transported from the scene had died. He was a pedestrian on Willamette Boulevard collecting cans and bottles.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was struck and killed late Thursday night in the 7400 block of North Willamette Boulevard, according to Portland police.

Officers were dispatched at 11:17 p.m. on a report of a crash and found several vehicles damaged, the driver of a red Volvo and an injured man who was then taken to a hospital.

During their investigation, officers learned that the victim, 32-year-old Jason M. Barns of Tigard, died. Barns was on Willamette Boulevard collecting cans and bottles.

The driver of the Volvo, 23-year-old Calum M. Breitenberg, was arrested.

Breitenberg was westbound when he hit several parked vehicles, then Barns, according to investigators. It appears speed and alcohol factored into the crash.

Breitenberg faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, reckless endangering and DUII.
