SUNRIVER, Ore. — A floatplane crashed into the Deschutes River late Saturday morning, killing one of two people aboard.

The pilot, 63-year-old Kevin Padrick, of Sunriver, died in the crash.

The passenger, 69-year-old Johannes Noordwijk, also of Sunriver, was able to escape the plane after the crash. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Sunriver Fire and Rescue.

The plane took off from Sunriver Airport and the crash was reported at around 10:40 a.m. The plane flipped upside down upon contact with the water, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.

It's unknown why the pilot attempted to land on the river. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
