Man living on the streets in Canby gifted trailer

A local business owner raised the money to purchase the trailer.

CANBY, Ore. — A cold, metal bench outside a strip mall in Canby is where Glenn Stevens has been sleeping for the past month and a half.

"It was convenient," Stevens said. "It's a safe environment right here."

The 69-year-old has fallen on hard times. He now finds himself living on the streets.

"I lost everything in my life," he said. "You're looking at what's left."

Stevens still makes helping others a top priority. One of the things he does is volunteer at the local food bank.

"Look for things to do to make the day go by," he said.

"Super nice guy," added Heather Doern. "Just a genuine heart."

Doern owns a business in Canby. It happens to be near the bench where Stevens rests his aging body at night. The two met in early November.

"I walked over and asked him if he was waiting for somebody and he said he wasn't," said Doern. "I said can I help with something and he said, 'I'm homeless, am I bothering you by sitting here?'"

Stevens was, in fact, bothering Doern, but not in the way you would think. The thought of somebody like Stevens sleeping in the cold troubled Doern. She turned to her Facebook community for help and they stepped up. They raised more than $2,000 to buy Stevens a temporary home.

"I just think it's a human treating another human with kindness is my only description of it," said Doern. "I feel anybody would do it."

On Friday evening, KGW was there as Stevens was gifted a trailer by a bunch of people, who up until recently, were strangers. Stevens now has a warm, safe place to sleep at night. The hope is that the trailer gives Stevens the opportunity to get back on his feet.

"I love you," Stevens said to Doern. "That's the best I can do on short notice."
