With temperatures soaring into the high 90s this week in Portland, don't forget to protect your pets from the heat.

The Humane Society has some tips on how to protect your pets:

  • Don't leave your pet in a parked car, ever! Even on a cooler day, temperatures can reach 100 degrees in a car. For example, on an 85-degree day, the temperature inside a car can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees.
  • Limit exercise. Try to use the early mornings and evening hours to exercise your pet. Always carry water with you to keep the dog from hydrating.
  • Don't use fans. Fans do not cool pets as effectively as they do people.
  • Provide shade and water. When it's really hot, add ice cubes to make the water extra cool. Tree shade and tarps are helpful to create shade for pets because they don't obstruct air flow.
  • Keep them cool inside and out. Make some peanut butter popsicles for your pet, wrap your pet in a cooling vest and/or soak your pet in a cool bath.
  • Make sure to check your pet for signs of heat stroke. Dogs that are very old, very young, overweight, not used to regular exercise, or have heart or respiratory disease are more at risk. See a list of pet heat stroke symptoms here.
