PORTLAND, Ore. — KGW journalists Cristin Severance and Gene Cotton are spending the year telling stories from a NE Portland elementary school through a project called “Inside Woodlawn”.
Our series has explored gentrification, why students should have teachers who look like them and the lengths some parents go to get their kids to school.
They sat down with a dozen Woodlawn students and asked what they are thankful for days before Thanksgiving.
Turkey, family and the teachers at Woodlawn were some of the most common answers.
“I’m thankful for my mom, my house, the roof over my head and the clothes on my back,” said fourth-grader Rashad.
Another fourth-grader, Brooklyn, said she was most thankful for the friends she has made at school.
“The school I used to be at, I was bullied and like, I was shy. Woodlawn helped me come out of my shyness, and all of my teachers are really kind,” said Brooklyn.
