PORTLAND, Ore. -- Many journalists spend decades honing their craft with the hope of someday being recognized by one of the industry’s top honors: The Pulitzer Prize. Photojournalist and Oregon native David Hume Kennerly won his when he was still in his twenties.
Kennerly has since captured photos of every American president since Richard Nixon, was in the room with George W. Bush on election night in 2000, and has had his work appear on the cover of more than 50 major magazines.

KGW reporter Pat Dooris and video journalist Mike Galimanis sat down with the Oregon History Maker Medal recipient at the Hotel Lucia, which displays hundreds of Kennerly’s photos.
The Oregon Historical Society has been awarding the Oregon History Makers medal annually since 2009. The award honors people and organizations that positively shape the history, culture and landscape of Oregon.
