Oregon coronavirus updates April 12: Eighth graders give their perspective on the pandemic

COVID-19 continues to spread in Oregon and Southwest Washington. Get the latest updates here.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Cases of COVID-19, a new strain of coronavirus, began popping up in the United States in January. On Feb. 28, the first case in Oregon was announced.

7 p.m.

  • We're all feeling a bit different in this unprecedented time. KGW photojournalist Richard Gordon heard from eighth graders about their perspective on the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more
  • Easter Sunday across the country and around the world was celebrated in an unprecedented way. Easter services went virtual. Because of the coronavirus, instead of physically going to church, people went online in order to maintain social distancing. Learn more
  • Portland's Chinese-American community has donated to family and friends in China, and now they're turning their attention to their Portland community. The Chinese American Coalition has organized donations of face masks and medical equipment here in Portland. Learn more

4:30 p.m.

  • Oregon small businesses are facing chaos and uncertainty as they seek federal coronavirus rescue loans. The Small Business Administration is having a tough time handing out the forgivable loans Congress earmarked in stimulus for small businesses. Learn more
  • A lot of people are anxious to get their economic impact payments, or what some are calling stimulus checks, as part of the federal government's $2.2 trillion relief package. The Internal Revenue Service has already started depositing the economic impact payments into people's bank accounts. But not everyone has received a payment yet. Learn more

3 p.m.

  • Newly unemployed Oregonians encountered further trouble with the state’s system for filing jobless claims benefits Sunday, reporting that the state told them to start over with their applications – even if they had already been receiving benefits. The department’s website acknowledges a problem and says a fix is coming soon. Learn more

12:40 p.m.

  • Another Oregonian has died from COVID-19, bringing the state’s death toll up to 52 people, officials reported Sunday. The OHA also announced 80 new known coronavirus cases. Learn more

7:45 a.m.

  • Portland students in need get help to internet access for distance learning. Learn more.
  • Some are trespassing onto closed parks and trails, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) says. Some people are even throwing signs off the road and moving barricades, according to OPRD. Learn more.
  • The IRS says the first wave of stimulus checks have already started going out to most Americans. Learn more
