PORTLAND, Ore. — Cases of COVID-19, a new strain of coronavirus, began popping up in the United States in January. On Feb. 28, the first case in Oregon was announced.

  • Oregon nursing homes and long-term care facilities have been hit especially hard by the coronavirus. Health officials confirm nearly half the COVID-19 deaths, or 24 of state’s 53, were people working or living in assisted living or long-term care facilities. Learn more
  • An Oregon woman who recovered from COVID-19 continued to test positive for weeks after her symptoms subsided. Learn more
  • The state agency in charge of investigating workplace safety violations says it will ramp up spot checks to verify that businesses are complying with Gov. Kate Brown’s stay-home order amid the coronavirus pandemic. Learn more

  • Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday will unveil framework on how the state will slowly ease restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more
  • Dozens of 911 and non-emergency calls about social distancing violations are coming in on a daily basis, but Portland police haven't issued any citations yet. Learn more

2:15 p.m.

  • Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced on Monday that he and governors from both California and Oregon have agreed to work together on a shared approach for reopening the states’ economies. Learn more
  • The Internal Revenue Service announced over Easter weekend the first Economic Impact Payments, also known as coronavirus stimulus checks, were already being deposited into some taxpayers' bank accounts.   • A 27-year-old Vancouver woman who gave birth while in a medically induced coma from coronavirus talked to the TODAY show. She said she feels “like I’m a miracle walking.” Learn more
  • A Southeast Portland man set out on a mission to create care packages for health care workers at local hospitals. He organized an effort and small businesses in the Portland area donated more 2,000 local products to fill the packages. Learn more

12:30 p.m.

  • The Oregon Food Bank will receive $8 million from the state of Oregon to assist families in need during the coronavirus outbreak. Learn more

Noon

  • Another Oregonian has died from COVID-19, bringing the state’s death toll up to 53 people, health officials report. The Oregon Health Authority also say there have been 57 new coronavirus cases. A total of 1,584 people in Oregon have tested positive for COVID-19. Learn more

7:45 a.m.

  • Many pot shops have seen a steady increase in sales during the COVID-19 outbreak. 4/20 is right around the corner and dispensaries are doing what they can to help keep people safe on the biggest holiday of the year for the cannabis industry. Cannabis consumers are encouraged to order online to avoid crowds. Many retailers also offer delivery to your doorstep. That way, you never have to come into contact with anyone and cannabis workers are protected as well. Learn more
  • Still waiting to receive your stimulus check? The IRS has started sending out the check and they plan to launch an online tool on April 17 (this Friday) called Get My Payment that will let you check the status of your stimulus check. Learn more
  • Newly unemployed Oregonians encountered further trouble with the state’s system for filing jobless claims benefits over the weekend, reporting that the state told them to start over with their applications, even if they had already been receiving benefits. The department’s website acknowledges a problem and says a fix is coming soon. Learn more
