Survey: Many Portland students don't have good relationships with teachers, aren't excited for class, don't feel they matter

The most worrisome results came out of the middle and high schools.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The results of a new survey involving Portland Public School students has some pretty grim findings.

A lot of kids say they don't feel like they have good relationships with their teachers, aren't excited for class, or don't feel like they matter.

The survey was conducted in the 2018-2019 school year.  It got responses from 5,770 7th and 10th graders and 3,672 5th graders.

The most worrisome results came out of our middle and high schools.

About 85% of 7th and 10th graders who responded to the survey said they are not at all that excited about class. Their answers ranged between somewhat excited and not at all excited about class.

Some 84% felt somewhat connected, slightly connected, or not connected at all to the adults at school.

Then 66% felt they mattered somewhat, a little bit, or not at all.

Compared to national numbers, the Portland Public School District ranks around the 10th percentile.

Those are just a few of the findings. The survey asked kids, faculty and staff, as well as parents, many questions about school.

But the survey results weren’t by any means all bad, about 85% of students felt their teachers treated them with respect.

Faculty and staff generally had positive responses overall.

School safety was one category where the majority of students, staff, and parents all had relatively positive responses.

Earlier this year, PPS launched its Successful Schools Survey.
