PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son has been sentenced to a decade in prison.

Taylor Kraig made no statement at Tuesday's sentencing in Multnomah County.

The toddler, Zackariah Daugherty, died in August 2016 from injuries he sustained while Kraig was caring for him. The toddler's mother, Amanda Daugherty, was working that day.

The mother attended the sentencing, but was too distraught to read her statement.

The statement read by the prosecutor said: "I will never understand why he had to be taken from me. I know he lives on because I see pieces of him everywhere I go. I just wish he was actually here with me. Without my Zack, I will never be the same."
