PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man admitted to having two beers and being the driver that hit and killed an 82-year-old woman in North Portland in April, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.

Jaime Mendoza-Chavez, 42, was arrested on criminal charges related to vehicular homicide in connection to the death of Sandra Bosch.

Witnesses reported that on April 10 an eastbound driver on North Fessenden Street struck Bosch as she was crossing the street at the intersection of North Polk Avenue, and drove away. One witness said Bosch hit her head on the passenger side of the windshield.

The next day, the University of Portland’s Department of Public Safety reported a suspicious vehicle that had a smashed front windshield and appeared to have hair embedded in the glass, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said, citing court documents. The vehicle was about two miles from where Bosch was hit and killed.

On May 21, the Oregon State Police Crime Lab confirmed the evidence recovered from the vehicle matched Bosch’s DNA, the district attorney’s office said.

Earlier this week, law enforcement contacted Mendoza-Chavez, who was the owner of the vehicle. The district attorney’s office said, according to court documents, Mendoza-Chavez admitted to investigators that he was the driver of the vehicle that hit Bosch and had consumed two beers.
