Dozens of cars vandalized in secure garages in SE Portland

Some of the car owners were forced to break self-quarantine to get their cars repaired.

PORTLAND, Ore — The Urbanaire Apartments in Southeast Portland is where Cynthia Kinney has lived for two years. She will be the first to tell you it has been great, but suddenly she is having second thoughts.

"I was mad," she said. "Mostly mad and I felt like I don't feel safe."

Kinney woke up Wednesday to quite the surprise in her secure parking garage. The driver side window on her 2018 Subaru Crosstrek was broken.

"My first word in the parking garage by myself was the F-word loudly," she said. "Then I slammed my car door and was really pissed off."

"It's very frustrating," said Jim Rostel, director of sales and operations for Anchor NW Property Group. "Everybody is frustrated right now."

Rostel said early Wednesday morning several people broke into the secure garages at Urbanaire and nearby Piccadilly Flats. Security cameras showed the suspects busting into approximately 30 vehicles.

"It's maddening when you watch it on video and watch these people with total disregard for other people's stuff," said Rostel.

The owners of these cars now have to find someone to fix their broken windows when so many places are closed, per Gov. Kate Brown's orders. Additionally, it is costly.

"How many people in Portland are unemployed? Quite a bit," said Kinney. "I don't know how they'll afford their glass."

Kinney was lucky enough to find an open repair shop. She paid $300 for a fix.

"I've been isolating for two to three weeks now and I had to go be around people which I don't want to do and get it fixed and drop it off," she said.

It makes an already difficult situation even worse. Kinney is hoping officers track down the suspects sooner rather than later.

"I hope they get caught or some kind of karma."

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Portland Police Bureau.
