Portland plans to raise garbage rates

The proposed increase comes in response to China's decision at the start of the year to stop buying much of our recyclable materials.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The city of Portland is looking to raise the garbage bills by $2.55.

The proposed increase comes in response to China’s decision at the start of the year to stop buying much of our recyclable materials. Now processors are having to pay other operations to take our recyclables.

The cost will likely be passed down to rate payers.

The city council is scheduled to vote on the fee increase on April 18. If approved, the increase could go into effect May 1.

Over the last five years, the city has lowered garbage rates twice, held them flat two years and raised them by 10 cents last year.
