Here are Portland's most innovative small businesses for 2018

On the surface, Agility Robotics builds machines that enable research and development at the academic, corporate and military levels.

But at its core, the Albany company is making robots that have a heart. Its legged robots could save lives, "by scouting ahead into unknown spaces and serving as a mobile sensor platform that can go where people go ... (the) robotic legged locomotion will enable live, real-time sensing with human-like mobility."

It's this forward-looking thinking that has earned Agility Robotics one of 16 Small Business Innovation Awards from the Portland Business Journal. The awards honor 15 small businesses and one enterprise that'll be named Startup of the Year.

The Small Business Innovation Awards are chosen by Portland Business Journal editors who analyze such factors as revenue, growth, product advancements and future prospects. The idea is to honor entrepreneurs and creative thinkers alike.

Along with Agility, this year's honorees include soon-to-be titans in the world of cannabis, food processing, technology, bioscience and advanced learning, among other fields.
