Free parking, other perks for downtown Portland shoppers Saturday

The campaign is called "Shop. Eat. Play." and its purpose is to help downtown Portland businesses that were hurt financially by the protests on Aug. 17.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler unveiled the city's plan to get people shopping in downtown Portland this weekend.

The campaign is called "Shop. Eat. Play." and its purpose is to help the businesses in downtown Portland that were financially hurt by the protests that took place on Aug. 17.

"Whenever a situation like the one last Saturday happens, it has a negative effect on our local business community, their employees, and their families," Wheeler said. "This is the busiest time of year, and businesses large and small have been significantly affected, so let’s show them some extra love on Saturday, Aug. 24."

Some of the plans to attract shoppers on Saturday, Aug. 24, include:

  • Free parking on downtown city streets both east and west of the Willamette River, and at all Smart Park garages.
  • Portland Streetcar will be offering free rides all day, rideshare companies and taxis, as well as various scooter companies, will also offer discounts using promo codes.
  • BIKETOWN is giving free rides all day.

The plan is a collaboration between the city of Portland, the Portland Business Alliance, Travel Portland and other agencies. More companies are expected to join the campaign before Saturday.
