Burgerville workers vote in favor of union at SE Portland restaurant

Backed by the Industrial Workers of the World Union, they're fighting for higher wages, along with benefits like maternity care.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Employees at a Southeast Portland Burgerville are celebrating what they believe is an historic victory.

Workers at the 92nd and Powell location on Monday voted in favor of the Burgerville Workers Union.

Backed by the Industrial Workers of the World Union, they’re fighting for higher wages, along with benefits like maternity care.

The BVWU is the only fast food union in the country with federal recognition.

The union says it expects to begin contract negotiations with the company soon.

Beth Brewer, Burgerville's senior vice president of operations, said in a statement, “If the IWW were to win an election at Burgerville Store 41, Burgerville will bargain in good faith with the union."
