A group created by Amazon's founder and his family has given $5 million to a Portland nonprofit.

JOIN said Tuesday it's one of the first groups to receive "a transformational" $5 million gift from the Day 1 Families Fund. The money will help the Portland group provide education, child care and job-finding assistance to those experiencing homelessness in the area.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos created the group to prevent and end family homelessness.

“This grant is a lifesaver for so many families,” said Shannon Singleton, JOIN's executive Director, in a release. "Every day we are out in the community conducting outreach to find families sleeping on the street, in cars and tents. With this funding, we will be able to help hundreds of families off the street during this winter alone.”

The group has helped homeless individuals and families for 26 years.

The Bezos fund gave $97.5 million to 24 nonprofits across the nation.
