Gail Simone, an iconic writer of Birds of Prey, loved the film and reckons you might too

Let's set the record straight, here.

PORTLAND, Ore. — If you’re not in the comics Twittersphere you may not know that Gail Simone is our mayor (perhaps queen), and also a prolific writer of many, many Birds of Prey comics.

She took to Twitter in a very long thread to talk about all the many things she loved about the new Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

She had one “sizable gripe” and from that, a hundred headlines were written.

So she took to Twitter again, this time to point out the unfairness of taking words, which were largely praising the film, and turning them into something that is all about the one “gripe.”

Well, let’s set the record straight. Not only did Gail Simone enjoy the movie, but other writers of the series and of Harley Quinn have come out and praised the movie.

It has a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and is the number 1 movie in the world right now, despite headlines showing it is underperforming compared to other DC franchise films. But box office metrics are a weird and tricky thing which do not give the full picture of the success of a film.

And the movie underwent a title change in hopes to bring in a larger audience and change those metrics. It no longer has the fantabulously long title and will instead be called Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey! at theaters where tickets can be purchased.

I reviewed the film and I thought it was wonderful. Think Deadpool in heels with all the flourishes of a POC woman in charge. I liked it more than I liked Wonder Woman and I might die on that hill.

Here’s my full review:

So all of that aside, a lot of people who know what they’re talking about enjoyed this film, I, a human who has no idea what she’s doing, had a great time. Maybe go and see it? You can tweet me @hello_destiny and let me know what you thought of it!
