Lions' roar will rumble Oregon Zoo
11:22 AM PST on Thursday, December 20, 2007
PORTLAND -- Roars from the king of the jungle are coming soon to the Oregon Zoo.
Officials said fundraising for the $5 million Predators of the Serengeti exhibit was ahead of schedule.
In addition to African lions, the exhibit will also feature African wild dogs, cheetahs and more. Zoogoers will be able top check out the animals through all-glass walls and expansive open area housing a natural habitat.

"Bringing lions back to the zoo not only answers the public's demand, but gives us the opportunity to help create a promising new chapter in the conservation story of a species that is sharply declining in the wild," Oregon Zoo Director Tony Vecchio said.
Vecchio said there could even be cubs in the future.
Zoo officials thanked the donations from corporations, foundations and private individuals, in addition to zoo volunteers, who raised more than $160,000 through their efforts.
“What began with a purr is definitely now a roar that can be heard around the region," Vecchio said
Some African lions are now listed as "endangered" and "vulnerable," wildlife experts said.
