Zoo animals gobble up Thanksgiving treats
08:09 AM PST on Wednesday, November 21, 2007
Animals at the Oregon Zoo are celebrating Thanksgiving a day early.
Meerkats will tear apart large papier-mÆachÄe turkeys and polar bears will feast on layered pumpkin "ice pie." Sun bears are set to attack a 100-pound ice treat filled with surprises including berries and pumpkins, topped off with a cardboard turkey.
Zoo animals celebrate Thanksgiving today, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
The zoo uses enrichment, a tool used to keep animals mentally and physically stimulated, to encourage hunting and foraging behaviors.
The animal treats are designed and created by the zoo's dedicated Volunteer Enrichment Team.
