Saki monkey born at Oregon Zoo
02:55 PM PDT on Monday, August 11, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Oregon Zoo is celebrating its first pale-faced saki monkey delivery.
The baby monkey was born in the early morning hours Thursday, Aug. 7.
The parents, Jackie and Bam-Bam, both age 15, have kept the newborn close, so keepers have been unable to determine the baby's gender.
"Jackie had a great pregnancy and birthing, and we are happy and excited about this new addition to the saki community," said David Thomas, senior primate keeper.
Jackie carried the baby for a little under six months, which is a typical term for saki monkeys, Thomas said. She and Bam-Bam have had two other babies together, but this their first since arriving at the Oregon Zoo from Mississippi's Jackson Zoological Park in October 2000.
The family resides in the zoo's Amazon Flooded Forest exhibit, which is undergoing repairs that actually improve viewing opportunities for the baby.
“The aquatic animals that usually share the exhibit space with the monkeys have been moved to a separate holding area while a window is being repaired,” said Oreegon Zoo marketing Director Bill LaMarche.
Pale-faced saki monkeys are found in tropical rain forests in southern and eastern Venezuela, Guianas, and northeastern Brazil. These shaggy primates tend to be small, fast and shy. Males are black with white faces; females are brown with white stripes on their faces. Although the monkeys are not endangered, their habitat is threatened by human destruction of rain forests.
