A friend described the sight as a couple of "jewels in the sky," as Jupiter made the closest pass by the Moon tonight that it will make for many years to come. For the first time since I took up astronomy three years ago, the Man in the Moon and the "Giant Among Giants," Jupiter, appeared in the same telescopic field, meaning they were visible in the scope's eyepiece at the same time! This shot was taken from SE Portland with a Canon 450D and a 4.5 inch telescope. To the naked eye, the Moon and Jupiter appeared less than a finger's width apart. I wonder what those two old souls talked about all night. Something of cosmic import, or just celestial small talk?
