My mother (who is 82 yrs old and loves photography) and I packed up our cameras and took a leisurely Sunday drive up the Gorge looking for winter photo opportunities. As it turned out, the scene at Horsetail Falls was exactly what we were looking for.
Several days of freezing temperatures in the Gorge created icicles on the branches of alder trees near Horsetail Falls.
I took this shot with a Fuji X10 camera. Once I got back to my computer, I created 6 separate shots, three of them overexposed 1, 2 and 3 stops and three underexposed the same 1, 2 and 3 stops. I used Photomatix Pro to create an HDR file which brought out detail in the highlights and shadows which otherwise, with a single exposure, would've been lost.
