I took my two kids (ages 4 and 8) to the Oregon Zoo yesterday to draw the animals. After drawing the penguins for almost an hour, we decided to visit the primate area. Our first stop was the orangutan enclosure. The smaller of the two was up on a perch when we arrived, but she hopped down immediately to watch us as we organized our drawing tools. She sat right in front of my daughter and watched her draw for several minutes. They looked right into each others' eyes several times, but mostly the orangutan simply watched Madeline draw. The connection was amazing. Even more amazing is that I caught a moment of it on film.
