POWAY, Calif. -- A victim of high school bullying got the last laugh Friday night when she was crowned homecoming princess, after her nomination was intended as a prank.
Rachel Sampson, 14, is autistic and a group of students at her Southern California high school thought it would be funny to put her name on the homecoming ballot.
“I decided that if it was a mean joke it, would drive those kids really nuts if I actually won and had a lot of fun with it,” Sampson said.
Rachel's mom spread the word about what happened on Facebook and the story went viral.
The students at Poway High rallied to Rachel's defense and voted her onto the court. She gathered enough support to be crowned freshman homecoming princess.
