Tragedy on the ice
The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. started tragically, even before the Olympic cauldron was lit. During a practice run, luge rider Nodar Kumaritashvili of the nation of Georgia lost control of his sled and went flying off the track on Feb. 12, 2010. He died of his injuries. Olympic officials immediately made safety adjustments at the Whistler Sliding Centre, changing the start area for all the luge sliding events and erecting a wall where Kumaritashvili flew off the track.
