SALEM, Ore. -- An East Coast tradition is making its way out west.

Game enthusiasts say turkey hunting is growing in Oregon.

Tags to hunt wild turkeys in the beaver state are available until the end of the season on December 31 in 10 Oregon counties. The limit is one bird per person per season.

According to wildlife officials wild turkeys were not native to Oregon. They were first introduced in 1961 and more than 10,000 turkeys have been transplanted throughout the state.

Oregon wildlife officials trap and relocate some birds to provide better access to hunters on public land.

The most successful season in Oregon is spring.

Biologists with the National Wild Turkey Foundation said there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys when the group was formed in 1973, now there are more than seven million birds throughout North America thanks to conservation efforts.
