Van Sant's 'Milk' debuts in Portland Friday night
11:52 AM PST on Friday, November 14, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland director Gus Van Sant will host a red carpet debut and benefit for his latest film “Milk” in downtown Portland Friday night.
The public was invited to join the stars on a red carpet party for the premiere of “Milk” -- the story of gay activist and San Francisco city politician Harvey Milk, who was assassinated in 1978.
The premiere benefits Outside In, which has been providing services to homless youth in Portland for 40 years.
"Just as Harvey Milk's bravery and sense of hope changed history, Outside In has encouraged and empowered a population that is sometimes overlooked and underestimated," Van Sant said.
The movie stars Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin and James Franco. The movie hits theaters nationwide on November 26.
The Portland premiere was scheduled for the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hallon Southwest Broadway with a patrons' dinner and director's reception for sponsors before the screening. Van Sant will speak at 8:30 p.m.
