Old Timers set to go back on strike this weekend

09:22 AM PDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

The 39th Annual Old Timers Team Bowling Tournament is set for this Saturday afternoon, October 18th at the AMF 20th Century Lanes in Southeast Portland.

Watch Drew Carney strike up some fun with the Old Timers during the 10/15/08 edition of Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

This is the longest running bowling tournament of its kind in the country. Howard and Ethel Sitter started the event back in 1969. The Sitters were also the publishers of The Oregon Bowler, a weekly bowling newspaper that printed between 1958 and 1992.

The minimum age to participate is 50, but many of the bowlers are much older than that.

The oldest bowler registered for this year's Old Timers Tournament is Maude Ballard, who is now a very young 96 years of age!! Maude’s team will once again include her son, 79-year-old Norman Ballard.

Howard and Ethel Sitter’s daughter, Debbie Deane, now acts as tournament director. You can contact Debbie directly for more information on this year’s event at (360) 694-7867, or check out the Tournament website, www.oldtimersbowl.com.
