Clark Co. Historical Museum offers walking tours
12:10 PM PDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
Vancouver, WA – Join the Clark County Historical Museum as history comes alive again with the commencement of the third annual Clark County Historical Museum Walking Tours Program.
In addition to the tours that feature Downtown Vancouver, the Arnada Park Neighborhood, and the buildings of Vancouver architect, Day Hilborn, this year’s tours also include two tours that look at the “Academy” and lower Main Street. Tours run May 29th – Sept. 6, 2008. Pre-registration is encouraged; tours are limited to 15 people per tour. Saturday tours are $10/person; CCHM members $5; Thursday tours are $5/person; CCHM members $2. Comfortable walking shoes are advised.
During the 2008 season the bi-weekly Saturday tours commence at 10 AM and last 1.5 to 2 hours. The weekly Thursday lunch time tours begin at 12:10 PM returning to the museum by 1 PM. All tours originate from the museum, 1511 Main St., and are a great way to learn about Vancouver’s downtown landscape.
During the new Saturday “Academy” tours participants will visit inside the House of Providence and learn fascinating details of the life of Mother Joseph. The Day Hilborn tours feature a look inside the County Court House and learn what was excavated from the site of the Fort Motel. Participants who choose the Downtown Walk will enter one of the area’s few historic homes that have not been converted to office space. Arnada Park walkers will learn the architectural details of the differing building styles from the early 1900’s to the 1950’s. This tour also focuses on the historic trees and sidewalk bloopers in Arnada Park.
This Saturday, June 28th, walkers will visit several of the buildings of Day Hilborn, dating from the 1920’s to the 1960’s. Featured is the Clark County Court House, where we will enter into the world of the judicial system, and tour the Court House from top to bottom with Judge John Wulle.
