Cyclist's life is remembered at annual Velodrome track race

10:17 AM PDT on Thursday, May 1, 2008

By DREW CARNEY, kgw.com Staff

The 3rd Annual Eric Kautzky Memorial Track Race is set for this Saturday, May 3rd, at the Alpenrose Velodrome.

Watch Drew Carney tackle the Alpenrose Velodrome prior to the 3rd Annual Eric Kautzky Memorial Track Race during the 05/01/08 edition of Newschannel 8 at Sunrise.

Proceeds from the Race will benefit the Eric Kautzky Memorial Scholarship Fund at Tigard High School.

Kautzky was a science teacher and a well-known athletic trainer at Tigard High School for 24 years. He was also a Team Rose City teammate that lost his life tragically on Saturday, June 18, 2005, while out on an early morning training ride on Tualatin-Sherwood Road. The accused 19-yr old motorist who struck and killed Kautzky was found guilty and sentenced to 17 months in prison for negligent homicide. Kautzky was 56 years old at the time of his death.

Thanks to the efforts of the local cycling community, most notably Kautzky’s Team Rose City teammates and River City Bicycles, $5300 has already been donated to the scholarship fund over the past 2 years. So far, the fund has issued scholarships to five deserving high school seniors who are planning careers in exercise science or physical education.

There will be several categories of racing during Saturday’s event, including those for men, women, and juniors.

Warm-ups and registration is scheduled to begin at 9:00am on Saturday with the racing action starting at 10:00am.

The Alpenrose Velodrome, one of the steepest and most challenging bike tracks in North America, is located on the Alprenrose Dairy property at 6149 SW Shattuck Road in Southwest Portland.
