ALOHA, Ore. -- Deputies believe an Aloha home was burglarized and then set on fire before the suspect fled on foot.

The owners of the home, in the 600 Southwest 215th Avenue, were out of town when the crime occurred on the night of October 20.

Lucina Laureano told KGW she and her husband were on a business trip in Reno when their neighbor called and said the house was on fire.

Detectives said someone broke into the home, stole some jewelry and started the fire.

“The interior of the house and its contents were severely damaged from the fire and subsequent water damage,” said Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

"Things are getting worse and worse, and everything is going to be lost," Laureano said as she surveyed the damage. "But it's ok, we're going to be fine. We're alive."

She said insurance would take care of the damage to the house, but she wasn't sure how many of her belongings were covered.

Anyone with information that may help investigators was asked to call the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at (503) 846-2500.
