PORTLAND -- Members of the Portland Thorns and the Portland Timbers came out Tuesday to share their love of soccer with kids.
They were on hand for a special screening of “The Beautiful Game," a documentary highlighting the unifying nature of soccer.
Athletes signed autographs and shared stories of how soccer has changed their lives. The event was put on by Mercy Corps, which uses soccer to promote recovery and reconciliation around the world.
"Work through conflict, work through differences, whether those are tribal, whether those are ethnic, and it's really just a unifying force for a lot of young people around the world," said Mercy Corps spokesman Matt Streng.
Kids also got a look at an exhibit on the power of sports, called “The Art of Sport,” which will be on display at the Mercy Corps Action Gallery through July.
