PORTLAND – A rash of car break-ins was reported over the weekend in Southeast Portland and police warned homeowners not to leave valuable items in their cars.

The vehicles were broken into Saturday night on Southeast 32nd Avenue, around the 6700 and 7200 blocks.

The thieves also broke into a garage and stole some very expensive bikes, according to a homeowner. Don Gritzmacher said the thieves probably found the garage door opener after breaking into his car, and then got into the garage and took the bikes.

He said he and his family were inside sleeping at the time and didn't hear anything. Neither did their dog.

“I think we all, as neighbors, just have to look out for each other and make sure we are reporting this kind of thing when it does happen,” Gritzmacher said. “If we are awake when something like this happens, call 911 right away. Don't come out and try to confront the guys.”

Some of the victims' cars were not locked. Police said the crimes serve as a reminder to lock car doors and avoid leaving any valuables inside, including garage door openers.
